Our role

The African Leaders Malaria Alliance is a groundbreaking coalition of African Union Heads of State and Government working to eliminate malaria by 2030.

We work to drive accountability and action for results against:

  • malaria
  • neglected tropical diseases (NTDs)
  • reproductive, maternal, newborn, child and adolescent health (RMNCAH)
  • nutrition

Our work and vision are aligned with both the African Union Agenda 2063 – “The Africa We Want” which sets the elimination of malaria as a key goal and the Catalytic Framework to end AIDS, TB and Eliminate Malaria in Africa by 2030.

Scorecard tools

Scorecard tools for health are easy to understand data visualisation tools that use different colours to indicate whether a health priority is performing well, making some progress or performing badly.

Through the use of scorecard tools, we support African Union member states to track progress and identify and overcome bottlenecks in the delivery of health services for malaria, NTDs, RMNCAH and nutrition.

These scorecard tools are operationalised at continental, regional, national, sub-national and community levels and serve as key management tools for sustaining political and leadership commitment to health service delivery.

End Malaria Councils and Funds

We support African countries in establishing national End Malaria Councils and Funds. These are country-owned and country-led, multi-sectoral forums, convening leaders from government, the private sector, civil society and the community in the fight against malaria.

They drive public and private domestic resource mobilisation and support for national malaria control and elimination programmes. In some countries, these councils and funds also address neglected tropical diseases.

Youth engagement

Our youth engagement mobilises young leaders across the continent to advocate and take action to end malaria and expand universal health coverage. We collaborate with African youth through national malaria youth corps and the ALMA Youth Advisory Council which provides ALMA with strategic guidance on engaging young people.

Regional Economic Communities

We are supporting the devolution of malaria within the African Union framework by forging new partnerships with Regional Economic Communities.

We, alongside the RBM Partnership to End Malaria, are working with the Regional Economic Communities of Africa to mainstream malaria at Head of State and Government, ministerial and technical levels.

Local manufacturing in Africa

We support the African Union’s development agency, the New Partnership for Africa’s Development (AUDA-NEPAD), in helping to improve Africa’s local manufacturing capacity for medicines, nets and vaccines across the continent. Guided by the African Union’s Agenda 2063, this work is set out in the AUDA-NEPAD’s Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Plan for Africa.

Pandemic preparedness and response

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the global community is working to implement best practices and strengthen health systems to be prepared for the next disease outbreak. Malaria is uniquely positioned to serve as a pathfinder for pandemic preparedness and response through continuing investments in malaria prevention, testing and treatment.
