The African Leaders Malaria Alliance is a groundbreaking coalition of African Union Heads of State and Government working to eliminate malaria by 2030.

ALMA Chair

The ALMA Chair is a sitting African Head of State and Government who convenes the ALMA member states and provides strategic leadership and guidance on achieving a malaria-free Africa. Approximately every two years, the role of ALMA Chair rotates to another African Head of State and Government from a different Regional Economic Community to ensure representation from across the continent.

Our current chair is His Excellency Umaro Sissoco Embaló, President of the Republic of Guinea-Bissau.

ALMA steering committee

The ALMA steering committee is comprised of the African Ambassadors to the United Nations. It is chaired by the United Nations Ambassador representing the ALMA Chair and provides guidance on key ALMA initiatives.

ALMA Inc. board of directors

The ALMA Inc. board of directors provides fiscal oversight of the nonprofit corporation set up to support the ALMA secretariat.

ALMA Executive Secretary

Joy Phumaphi is the Executive Secretary of the African Leaders Malaria Alliance and is responsible for the ALMA secretariat.

ALMA Special Ambassadors

The ALMA Special Ambassadors lead our engagement with the African Union Commission, Regional Economic Communities and senior country officials. Our two special ambassadors are Ambassador Professor Sheila Tlou and Ambassador Anthony Okara.

ALMA secretariat

The ALMA secretariat is comprised of professionals who support the ALMA Heads of State and Government in achieving a malaria-free Africa.

The staff work to support countries with high-level engagement, rollout of national scorecard tools, End Malaria Councils and Fund and youth engagement.
