Uganda: Malaria Free Uganda
Introduction
In August 2020, the Republic of Uganda, in partnership with Malaria Partners International (formerly Rotarian Malaria Partners), established Malaria Free Uganda – a nonprofit, public-private partnership. This End Malaria Fund is tasked with supporting the National Malaria Control Division of the Ministry of Health by mobilising advocacy, action, and resources to address gaps and bottlenecks in the national malaria strategy.
Malaria Free Uganda is managed by a multisectoral board of directors. It is currently chaired by the Uganda Chair of Malaria Partners International.
Key commitments
Since launching, Malaria Free Uganda has worked to sensitise private sector companies to the impact of malaria on employment, worker productivity and the country’s development priorities. Through this engagement, they have received multiple pledges and commitments from companies, including:
- DHL committing to transporting of malaria commodities, including redistribution of existing supplies to address upsurges and stockouts
- Fosum Pharmaceuticals providing training to health workers and pharmacists on national guidelines for diagnosis and treatment
- Centenary Bank and other financial institutions pledging to support social and behavioural change communications, vector control and case management
Malaria Free Uganda also supports the Zero Malaria Business Leaders Initiative (ZMBLI), in partnership with Ecobank and Speak Up Africa. Ecobank Uganda’s managing director is a member of the board of directors and the bank has pledged US$120,000 in matching funds to support private sector resource mobilisation.
