Timeline of End Malaria Councils and Funds’ progress

2017

His Majesty King Mswati III leads the way

His Majesty King Mswati III of the Kingdom of Eswatini (then the ALMA Chair) called on African Heads of State and Government to support the establishment of national, multisectoral End Malaria Funds.

These funds would mobilise additional resources from domestic, bilateral and multinational sources to close gaps in national malaria strategic plans and accelerate progress towards malaria control and elimination.

Councils included in the Zero Malaria Starts with Me toolkit

End Malaria Councils are included as a component of the Zero Malaria Starts with Me toolkit as a strategic priority for mobilising multisectoral advocacy, action and resources. 

2019

Zambia launches first End Malaria Council

The Republic of Zambia launches the first End Malaria Council in March 2019 – providing a roadmap for the countries that followed. The members of the End Malaria Council established a subsidiary End Malaria Fund governed by an independent board of directors to support the council’s resource mobilisation mandate.

Eswatini launches End Malaria Fund

The Kingdom of Eswatini launches the first End Malaria Fund in May 2019.

2020

Mozambique launches End Malaria Fund

The Republic of Mozambique launches Fundo da Malaria in August 2020.

Uganda launches Malaria Free Uganda

The Republic of Uganda launches Malaria Free Uganda (an End Malaria Fund) in September 2020.

2021

Kenya launches End Malaria Council

The Republic of Kenya launches their End Malaria Council in February 2021.

Countries announce plans to establish End Malaria Councils on World Malaria Day

Burkina Faso and the Republic of Cameroon announce plans to establish national End Malaria Councils and Funds. The Republic of South Africa announced a plan to establish an End Malaria and NTDs Fund as part of a public-private partnership with Goodbye Malaria.

End Malaria Councils included in the proceedings of the UN General Assembly

During the proceedings of the UN General Assembly, His Excellency President Uhuru Kenyatta (then the ALMA Chair) called on the international community to support the control and elimination of malaria in Africa, including through national End Malaria Councils and Funds.

Tanzania’s President announced her intention to establish an End Malaria Council

During a public meeting with Joy Phumaphi, ALMA’s Executive Secretary, Her Excellency President Hassan announces plans to establish a multisectoral End Malaria Council for the United Republic of Tanzania.

2022

Guinea announces an End Malaria Council

As part of the World Malaria Day 2022 commemorations, the Republic of Guinea announces plans to establish a national End Malaria Council.

Kigali Summit on Malaria & NTDs

During the Kigali Summit on Malaria & NTDs (on the sides of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting) in July 2022, representatives of existing End Malaria Councils announced a shared commitment to mobilise more than US$100 million to close gaps in national malaria strategic plans.

During the summit, the national malaria and NTDs programme manager for the Republic of Rwanda announced plans to establish the Integrated Disease Control Council & Fund, a multisectoral effort to mobilise advocacy, action and resources to support malaria, NTDs, and other priority diseases.

On behalf of His Excellency President Buhari, the Honourable Minister of Health for the Federal Republic of Nigeria announced that the country would establish an End Malaria Council.

His Excellency President Buhari launches the Nigeria End Malaria Council

In August 2022, His Excellency President Buhari presided over the inauguration of the Nigeria End Malaria Council. This multisectoral council is chaired by Mr Aliko Dangote, an industrialist, philanthropist and global malaria champion.

2023

Tanzania launches End Malaria Council

On World Malaria Day (25 April), the Honourable Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa – representing Her Excellency President Samia Suluhu Hassan – launched Tanzania’s national End Malaria Council.

Guinea-Bissau launches End Malaria and NTD Council

In May 2023, the Republic of Guinea-Bissau’s Honorable Dr Dionísio Cumba, Minister of Health, unveiled the country’s End Malaria and NTD Council, on behalf of His Excellency President Umaro Sissoco Embaló. Guinea-Bissau’s End Malaria and NTDs Council marks a remarkable milestone for the continent as the eighth country to launch its council, but the first to additionally address NTDs.
