About RMNCAH
Reproductive, maternal, newborn, child and adolescent health (RMNCAH) is an important measure of progress towards universal health coverage and a priority health area for African countries. While progress has been made in improving RMNCAH outcomes since 2000, Africa still bears the highest burden of maternal and child mortality and morbidity.
The Global Strategy for Women’s, Children’s and Adolescents’ Health (2016 to 2030) was developed to provide guidance to countries to end preventable mortality and enable women children and adolescents to enjoy good health while playing a full role in transformative change and sustainable development.
Our RMNCAH work
We are helping to improve reproductive, maternal, newborn, child and adolescent health through:
- tracking RMNCAH indicators on the continental ALMA Scorecard for Accountability and Action
- country RMNCAH scorecard tools
Tracking RMNCAH indicators on the continental ALMA Scorecard for Accountability and Action
We include RMNCAH indicators on the continental ALMA Scorecard for Accountability and Action. The indicators include:
- Integrated community case management (iCCM) implementation
- Percentage of children living with HIV who have access to antiretroviral therapy
- Percentage of children receiving two age-appropriate doses of vitamin A
- Percentage of children receiving three doses of the combined diphtheria, tetanus toxoid and pertussis vaccine

Country RMNCAH scorecard tools
National RMNCAH scorecard tools are country-owned and country-led. Each country-level scorecard tool is made up of country selected priority indicators based on national RMNCAH strategic plans.
Country RMNCAH scorecard tools show the progress being made at sub-national levels (such as counties or districts) and allows comparisons between sub-national levels, easily identifying areas that are performing well or need additional support. They help leaders and actors at different levels make informed data-driven decisions on RMNCAH, leading to impact. These scorecard tools are used to drive action, such as through addressing upsurges, stock-outs, task-shifting and filling resource gaps.
We have supported over 30 countries to develop and implement RMNCAH scorecard tools. Some countries also include nutrition indicators on their scorecard tools too. We help countries:
- strengthen and institutionalise their scorecard tools to promote transparent data sharing
- document country best practices to assist fellow countries
- share their scorecard tools on the ALMA Scorecard Hub
Country RMNCAH scorecards are driving action by:
- increasing resources for reproductive, maternal, newborn, child and adolescent health
- improving data availability to decision makers
- addressing stock-outs
- supporting task shifting
