Alma welcomes senior adviser to facilitate the chair’s malaria elimination agenda
The African Leaders Malaria Alliance (ALMA) welcomes Dr. Willis Simon Akhwale, MBChB, PhD to the ALMA Secretariat as Senior Advisor. Dr. Akhwale will serve as the liaison between the ALMA Chair, His Excellency Uhuru Kenyatta, President of Kenya and the ALMA Secretariat.
He is charged with facilitating the ALMA Chair’s 4 point legacy agenda:
- Digitalization and real time access to malaria data;
- Engagement with Africa’s Regional Economic Blocs;
- Create national End Malaria Councils and Funds and
- A Youth Advisory Group to champion malaria commitments. Dr. Akhwale will coordinate across various Kenyan Ministries and Agencies to ensure progress on the ALMA Chair’s agenda.
Dr. Akhwale is a medical doctor by profession and brings more than 25 years of exceptional health management and technical experience. Much of his career has been spent working on malaria prevention and control in Kenya. Dr. Akhwale has held several positions in the Kenyan Ministry of Health and International Organisations. His achievements have received Presidential recognition, including the award of the Moran of the Burning Spear (MBS) medal. He has an extensive track record working with key global health partners like the USAID and CDC, the Japan International Co-operation Agency, the Global Fund, PEPFAR, the World Bank and the World Health Organization.
