ALMA joins the malaria community in mourning the sad loss of Dr. Albert Peter Okui who died suddenly and unexpectedly in Uganda, on 12 November 2015. Dr. Okui was the Programme Manager of Uganda’s National Malaria Control Programme since 2012. He was a dedicated Programme Manager who oversaw the first ever universal Long Lasting Insecticidal Nets (LLINs) campaign in Uganda, which led to significant reductions in the country’s malaria burden. He was also a dedicated advocate for the expansion of indoor residual spraying (IRS) in Uganda., and case management including treatment through the private sector, expanded coverage considerably under his management. Peter was an exceptionally kind and gentle man, yet with a steely determination in the fight against malaria. Just minutes before he died he was planning malaria control measures, including emergency indoor residual spraying, to address the epidemic in the north of Uganda. He will be very much missed by all of us in the malaria community. We send our sincere condolences to his family and friends.
