ALMA CHAIR H.E. PRIME MINISTER HAILEMARIAM ENDORSES COMMUNITY HEALTH WORKERS REPORT

The ALMA Chair endorsed a newly published report titled Strengthening Primary Health Care through Community Health Workers:Investment Case and Financing Recommendations, which highlights an urgent need for national governments and development partners to increase investment in Community Health Workers (CHWs) as part of integrated health care systems. The report provides key findings such as: a scale up of CHWs can save up to 3 million more lives each year, for every dollar spent on CHWs there is a $10 productivity gain as a result of healthier populations, there is a need for highly trained and skilled community health workers to be integrated into the primary health system, and there is a need for countries to find financing mechanisms. Recommendations included: sub-Saharan Africa prioritizing CHW programs, international donors to increase funding for CHWs and for the international health community to support existing CHW initiatives by helping to assess financing options and develop a measuring system to track progress.
